Last night, Thursday, March 4, at 23:30 Japan time, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) released a new report on food loss. Nearly one billion tons of food available to consumers worldwide is wasted, and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions account for nearly 10% of the world’s total emissions. Food loss is a major contributor to climate change, according to the UK’s WRAP. Household waste in middle-income countries, previously thought to be “low,” has also been found to be higher than expected.
